One of my wife’s shocks started leaking fluid. I had her buy a new set of Bilsteins a few weeks ago and had putting off installing them. I’ve installed quite a few sets before but never on a modern BMW.
You have to remove all the upholstery in the back in order to reach the top of the shocks. It was actually really easy and quick. I didn’t end up with any extra clips or screws and for once in my life didn’t break any plastic clips or rivets.
This is our boring family car so I just replaced the old shocks with OEM Bilsteins. Took me a couple hours mostly because I went really slow making sure I didn’t break or lose anything.
Probably saved myself a few hundred bucks by not taking it to the dealer.

Nah, man. That’s unacceptable. Today the shocks, tomorrow the entire powertrain for all you know!. Let me save you the trouble. Trade that X1 for my wife’s not-a-Corolla.

no really though, glad the job went without any problems and that it’s not hard!
I actually have to install the rear shocks on my car. I already have them.

I still have 2 years/34k miles of warranty left on the powertrain (it was a CPO that I bought with only 35k miles on it). Hoping the engine blows up with like 50 miles to go. I’ll end up having a 200k mile modern BMW! She’s at 64k miles now and the only non maintenance item it has needed was a coolant resevoir which was covered under warranty. The dealership just replaced her remote battery for free which was cool. I also got free new pads and rotors on all four corners at 49k miles.

64k is kinda early to need new shocks, especially Bilstein!

I was using it as an camping vehicle for a few years which probably contributed to it. Lots of very rutted forest roads while loaded down with camping gear. We even took it on all over the western US last year on a three week trip and camped out of it all over. The other strut was still good so it wasn’t like it wore out, it just failed. I ended up buying a Jeep so as to give the bimmer a break.

Shows what I know. I was thinking to myself. “Wow, I didn’t know the CL-class was THAT old...” Then google was like, “No.”
